Made Real Progress on a New Deal for Cities:
  • Lobbied the province to create the new City of Toronto Act, which will give the City the authority to determine its destiny.
  • Secured a share of the gas tax from both the provincial and federal governments that will put over $ 500 million into the TTC's coffers over the next 2 years.

Helped House the Homeless:
  • Developed the "From Streets to Homes" outreach strategy through which community agencies and city outreach workers have helped hundreds of homeless get off the street and into homes of their own.
  • Created an Affordable Housing Office to expedite the building of affordable housing.
  • Signed affordable housing agreement with the federal government that will transform Regent Park into a new model of community housing and the building, this year, of up to 1000 new units of affordable housing.

Built a Better Business Climate:
  • Limited commercial property tax increases to a maximum of one-third of any residential tax increases.
  • Created a Neighbourhood Retail tax class.
  • Lobbied the Ontario government to make the assessment of provincial education taxes on business properties fair across the Greater Toronto Area.

Cleaned up Toronto:
  • Created the Mayor's Clean and Beautiful City Initiative, which is making Toronto look better than it has in years.
  • Hired more litter pickers, added new street sweepers, and bought new street vacuums, enhanced horticultural displays and improved the city's urban forest.
  • Created the Mayor's 20-minute makeover, which mobilized residents to clean up their neighborhoods.

Made Real Progress on Waterfront Renewal:
  • Envisioned a splendid waterfront that has begun its transformation from industrial wasteland into vibrant residential communities with spectacular parks and leading edge commercial enterprises all linked by public transit.
  • Started the following projects: communities on the Don Lands, new public promenades, a world class rowing facility, a soccer stadium, a Film Studio and Media Complex.
  • Stopped the construction of the bridge to the Island Airport on his first day in office.

Improved Toronto's Transit:
  • Instituted transferable as well as weekly Metropass, which has made the TTC more flexible and affordable.
  • Established new bus routes in northern Scarborough, Etobicoke, North York, and York to increase transit ridership, decrease greenhouse gas emissions, and make transit more accessible outside of downtown.
